How long does it take to learn the piano?

Wondering how long it can take to learn piano?

Find out what you can expect along your journey, alongside factors that may improve your ability to learn piano and our top tips at Richard Lawson Pianos.

So, how long does it take to learn the piano?

Skill level and development can vary greatly, depending on a variety of factors. However, here’s a rough guide of what you can expect:

The first 6 months

Within the first 6 months, pianists can often learn several chords, play songs that have straightforward tunes, and pick up a bit of rhythm.

During this time, you can achieve a solid foundation, mastering basic abilities in reading sheet music and becoming more dexterous and comfortable with the instrument.

The first 2 years

After consistently practising for two years, you can often feel confident playing an eclectic variety of pieces, including more complex songs and using both hands with accuracy and technical proficiency.

Players can also usually develop a deeper understanding of how to play and read sheet music, alongside chords and scales.

After 5 years

After 5+ years, players should expect to be at an intermediate to advanced level of playing, with a deep repertoire of tunes – including more complex works by Beethoven and Chopin, if you wish.

At this point, you should also hopefully be able to play by ear and read nuanced sheet music with ease, as well as the ability to compose, interpret, and improvise.

Once you’ve surpassed this stage, the world is your oyster. You could even go on to expand your portfolio further, playing professionally, or teaching piano.

Factors affecting learning piano

As mentioned earlier, a number of factors can affect learning ability.

Firstly, every piano student is different. Age can be a contributing factor, with young children often having stronger muscle memory and dexterity. However, adult beginners tend to have a stronger sense of motivation, focus, and discipline, which is often an advantage.

Additionally, the amount of practice, of course, affects how long it takes to learn the piano. You can usually expect a player spending two hours daily rehearsing to advance much quicker than someone who dedicates one hour weekly.

Additionally, piano lessons may advance players further than becoming a self-taught musician, as a good piano teacher provides personalised feedback and structured learning. Having prior musical knowledge can also be hugely beneficial.

Practice makes perfect

Consistent practice for just an hour or so every day is extremely effective and much more beneficial than long but irregular sessions.

Your piano learning journey won’t turn you into a concert pianist overnight, so practising patience and staying disciplined can make a world of difference if you want to reap the rewards.
