I can hear clearly now…
One highlight of the CA98 digital piano is the tonal clarity and extensive dynamic range that has been reproduced from the wonderful Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano. These pianos are broadly seen as ‘premier pianos of Japan’, and now this can be said for the digital piano market too. To reflect the magnificence of sounds produced by these stunning instruments, this model makes use of SK-EX Rendering. This enables the piano to merge together multi-channel, 88-key sampling with brand new timbre modelling technology. This means that the sound of the concert grand piano is captured from various sound points, providing a more extensive variety of tonal characteristics to be replicated in digital form. Changes in dynamics are therefore more rich and expressive, giving added authenticity. This is enhanced by recent developments in resonance algorithms, which have the added physicality of the interplay between strings, damper, and other facets of the acoustic piano. It sounds just like the real thing.
Ebony and ivory in digital
Just like an acoustic grand piano, the piano keys of the CA98 model are made from long pieces of wood, and pivot central balance pin with a silky smooth, seesaw movement. The natural motion of the wood connects with the grade-weighted metal hammers at the back, making use of triple-sensor technology to offer a realistic response system. The Grand Feel II’s action eighty-eight black and white keys hold within them the experience of Kawai’s 90 years’ worth of piano artistry. Modelled on the Kawai acoustic grand piano, this digital piano also provides an extended pivot length, so players get a sense of consistency when playing the keys to the rear of the keyboard. Pianissimo passages are completed with fluidity as counterweights lay below each key for extra balance. The keyboard action also includes Kawai’s Ebony & Ivory Touch key surfaces, gradually absorbing moisture from hard-working fingertips, for added smoothness and style.
A partnership to treasure
For this model, Kawai collaborated with Onkyo, one of Japan’s leading premium audio equipment manufacturers. Pioneering the way forward with digital pianos, these pianos are the first to employ these specialist components designed for high-end audio products, such as 1-bit DSD processing, dual DAC signal conversion, and Onkyo’s exclusive DIDRC circuitry. This means you get the incredible clarity of sound through the optimised power amplification. As the flagship model, the CA98 showcases the perfect partnership with the combination of the Onkyo driver units and Kawai’s freshly developed TwinDrive soundboard. The natural sound is exemplified through the use of Onkyo transducer mechanisms to channel sound energy onto a real wooden soundboard. A true Concert Artist model, it also features Onkyo’s Discrete SpectraModule™ headphone amplifier, combined with Kawai’s existing Spatial Headphone Sound (SHS) technology. So, whether to a large audience of people or lost in your own world, the sound is sure to strike straight to the heart.
A simple touch
This digital piano can connect to computers, other instruments, and various smart technologies. It does this not only through the standard USB and MIDI jacks, but through an integrated Bluetooth® MIDI and Audio technology, meaning you can connect without wires. Whether you are communicating with a phone, tablet, or laptop, there are a range of compatible music apps you can use with the CA98 model whether learning the piano, or practising at your leisure. You can even stream audio from songs and videos directly through the piano. In addition, it features a full-colour 5” touchscreen display, so everything you could need is at the touch of your fingers. Leading the way with this innovation, this model is amongst the first of its kind to use this touchscreen technology. What’s more, is that it is subtly embedded within the left cheekblock. Through this, the player is enabled to adjust sounds and settings simply by tapping or swiping the display with a finger. It is easily turned on and off whilst you play, including an automatic function setting, allowing you to get lost in the sound without any distractions.
A classic style for a modern age
This incredible technology is all housed in a digital piano featuring a wooden cabinet with a flat fascia and raised upper board, giving it a classic feel and look. The music rest is designed to hold the most ambitious musical scores, with six adjustable positions and smooth, rounded edges, and a simulated leather lining at the base. Reflecting that of the acoustic grand piano, it can also be altered to suit your playing position. Alternatively, it can be set to a special ‘composer desk’ angle for optimum comfort when notating scores or sketching musical ideas. Available in Premium Rosewood, Premium Satin Black, and Premium Satin White, slotting into your home in a way that is modern, yet classical.
Comparison with CA78 model
There are many features that cross-over with the CA78 model. The CA98 model features a wider range of internal sounds, a couple more demo songs, and makes use of smaller dome tweets and more top speakers within its speaker system. It has a higher power consumption, and features more depth and height, weighing in at around 10kg more.
With amazing multi-channel grand piano sounds, an authentic wooden-key keyboard action, premium audio, amplification, and speaker technologies, brilliant Bluetooth connectivity, and a modern touchscreen interface, this new Kawai CA98 model delivers the Concert Grand experience to your home.
