Which piano is best for beginners to buy?

In reality, any quality piano can be played and enjoyed at any level – whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned pro.

That said, if you’re new to piano playing, it can be worth sticking to the lower end of the market. As a beginner you’re unlikely to need, or fully appreciate, the musicality of a grand piano…but you’ll still be paying for it.

Worth too, considering the benefits of digital pianos – these are great for learners and can even hook up to teaching apps. Silent pianos are also a popular option, allowing you to plug in headphones and reserve the sound of endless practicing for your own ears.

We firmly believe there’s a perfect piano for everyone, and we’re here to help you find yours. Our knowledgeable team can help you to find the ideal instrument based on your playing needs, desires – and budget. Talk to us today.

What is a good brand of piano?

Here at Richard Lawson Pianos, we stock only the most reputable and reliable piano brands – YamahaKawaiSteinwayBösendorferPetrof, the list goes on.

Each manufacturer brings their own individual qualities and nuances to their instruments, but you can be confident that every piano brand we stock is renowned for exquisite craftsmanship, attention to detail and beautiful sound.

For help finding the right piano for your playing style and needs, why not talk to the team or make an appointment to pop into our showroom and try out the different makes and models for yourself.

How long can a piano last?

Upright pianos, grand pianos, or anything in between, with the right care and maintenance, there’s no reason a quality piano can’t last a lifetime.

As a general rule, it’s expected that mass-produced pianos will perform at their best for around 30 years. With handcrafted models, this increases to at least 50 years. However, with professional tuning and regular servicing, this can extend to over 100 years – meaning there’s no reason you can’t pass your cherished instrument down through the generations.

Keen to get the best out of your piano and make sure it lasts? Then visit our tuning page or get in touch with the team to find out more about the professional tuning and technical expertise we have on offer for upright and grand pianos.

Are old pianos better than new?

The answer to this question is entirely personal, and we’d be inclined to sit on the fence – we love both!

Yes, a brand-new piano will be in pristine condition and offer all the latest features and musical advances – but it will have a price tag to match.

In comparison, an older piano – provided it has received proper care and maintenance – can more than equal the sound quality, but at a fraction of the price. Yes, with age the framework may start to look a little worn, but this will be reflected in the cost. A pre-owned piano can typically save you around 50% on the equivalent new version.

Whether you’re tempted by shiny new digital pianos or charmed by the history of old grand pianos, both can offer a lifetime of musical enjoyment. And here at Richard Lawson Pianos, we’re so confident in the restoration quality of our pre-owned pianos, that we offer the same great 30-day trial period and 5-year guarantee on all our instruments.

    Do pianos hold their value?

As with most significant investments, the value of a piano will depreciate over time.

As a guide, you can expect a new piano to depreciate by about 20% in the first year and by 2-5% annually.

You can protect your investment by ensuring your piano is properly cared for. This means regular tuning, cleaning, and protecting the casing.

Pre-owned instruments tend to retain more value than new, but when it comes to making sure you get the maximum benefit from your investment, our best advice is to make sure you’re paying a good price.

At Richard Lawson Pianos, we have both new and pre-owned pianos for sale and guarantee fair, competitive pricing. Talk to the team to find out more or for help sourcing a piano within your budget.

Is buying a piano the only option?

    No!

At Richard Lawson Pianos, we have an impressive collection of both new and pre-owned pianos. But this isn’t your only choice – we offer piano hire too.

We understand that buying a piano is a significant investment, and there are numerous reasons why you might not feel ready to commit – such as concerns piano playing may turn out not to be your thing, or being unsure about the type of piano you want or where it will fit in your home (full-sized grand pianos aren’t for everyone!).

We’re here to help you get it right the first time. By offering a fantastic piano hire service, you can try before you buy, giving you greater confidence that you’re making the right choice.

Don’t forget – if you do decide to buy from us, we offer a 30-day returns policy too

I wanted a Yamaha C6. I saw one on eBay. I worried about its state as an eBay item but found it was being sold by Richard Lawson Pianos, it was also on their website with many other pianos. I checked as many reviews as I could find about … More this company and found them hugely positive. That gave me the confidence I needed to make contact by email. Richard responded promptly. A visit to the showroom would have been difficult for me at this time and after a few emails between us I accepted Richard’s assurance that the piano was excellent. I decided to buy the C6. It was delivered by a team of three people who were clearly experienced in moving pianos as it had to come a circuitous route into the house; another happy experience as they were also good people to deal with. Richard spoke truly – it is an excellent Yamaha C6. A good piano is an expensive purchase. If you want value for money and a pain free experience, choose Richard Lawson Pianos.

Richard spent a lot of time helping me pick out the right piano for me. All I needed to do was tell him my exact specification for what I was looking for, and he quickly came up with a shortlist of possible pianos. He also replied to emails … More promptly. He didn't rush me, and allowed me to come and visit multiple times to try out different pianos as they came into the showroom. The showroom is also very nice (the only criticism is that it is slightly difficult to find), with a huge range of pianos. The delivery crew were also efficient and accommodating. I don't foresee changing pianos for a long time, but I would go back to Richard Lawson, and recommend to any friend.

I have been aware of Shigeru Kawai pianos since Florian Mitrea told me about them two years ago. I took the opportunity to hear Ashley Fripp play one at Richard Lawson’s piano studio last November. It was wonderful. I hesitated about … More buying one because I thought we did not have room for one. I visited RL again on 28th February and chose an SK2. It was delivered on 6 March. The two men were extremely prompt and efficient. We were so impressed. The piano is magnificent with such a beautiful sound and action and a joy to play. My one regret is that I waited so long.
