Celebrate World Music Day in style

Celebrate World Music Day in Style - Richard Lawson Pianos

Music is a universal language.

Transcending age, race, and gender, it speaks to everyone. The simplest melody can trigger a memory or spark emotion, bringing joy, happiness, excitement, or even sorrow.

At Richard Lawson Pianos, we think the impact of music is pretty amazing – and we’re not on our own. In fact, so many people are keen to share and promote the power and positivity of music, there is now an internationally recognised day to celebrate – World Music Day. And this year’s UK event, Make Music Day, is marked out for the 21st of June.

What is World Music Day?

If ever a day was going to make our hearts sing, this is it.

Originally known as Fête de la Musique, World Music Day started in Paris back in 1982, and is now held every year, across the globe, in June.

Designed to celebrate diversity and unite cultures, the original event featured free public performances. The aim was to give everyone access to enjoy music, whilst also providing a stage for musicians to showcase their talents.

Local schools got behind the idea, hosting workshops, masterclasses, and competitions, resulting in the day being heralded as a huge success.

Fast forward to 2024, and World Music Day – or Make Music Day, as we now badge it up in the UK – is recognised in more than 125 countries worldwide.

With every musical genre and every instrument included, it’s a fantastic way to bring people together and encourage all ages and abilities to participate in the magic of making music.

The initiative is taken into schools, youth and community groups, hospitals, and even prisons to share and celebrate the positive effects of music. And in 2022, a fantastic 2.8 million people were reached through #MakeMusicDayUK.

Pianos from around the world

Okay, so we admit we are a little biased toward the piano, but we believe it is an instrument that upholds the ethos behind World Music Day perfectly.

The very definition of unity, a piano pulls together the diversity of an orchestra. Unites the voices of a choir. Can perform classical works every bit as well as it can adapt to modern pop music. It’s even an instrument that can be played alone, but is also ideal for duetting – heck, you can even buy a duet stool! Now if that doesn’t tick the box for bringing people together through music, we don’t know what does.

Additionally, pianos are produced in many countries, with renowned manufacturers found across all corners of the globe – making the heritage of this musical instrument widely multicultural.

Just some examples include:

  • Bösendorfer pianos – world-class instruments originating from Austria
  • Bechstein pianos – one of Germany’s most highly regarded piano brands
  • Kawai pianos – world-renowned pianos that come from Japan’s long-founded factory
  • Steinway pianos – many of which are crafted in New York.
